Do you like shopping online? Most people do. In fact online shopping continues to outpace other shopping alternatives. You can shop from the comfort of your own home any time of day. In short, it’s easy and convenient.
Unfortunately, the same ease and convenience we all enjoy is also used by people committing fraud, fraudsters we call them.  Fraudsters can easily purchase a list of credit cards with names attached and use them at any online, ecommerce store. It’s a simple crime but the good news is you can take simple steps to thwart them.

One of the easy things to dois toggle on the Card Verification Value (CVV – also sometimes referred to as a CVC code) check in your payment gateway. This forces the purchaser to fill in the 3-digit code found on the back of their credit card (or the 4-digit code on the front of an Amex card). When fraudsters purchase lists, those lists often do not contain the code. It’s an easy way to reduce fraud.
Of course, even if your business always requires the card security code for every transaction, you will not be able to completely eliminate chargebacks. There are several situations when the correct card security code could be entered, but a chargeback would still be filed:

• The card was lost or stolen and the fraudster has possession of it. The card security code is in plain sight.
• The cardholder commits friendly fraud with the intention of getting something for free.
• The cardholder is unaware of authorized purchases made by a family member or friend.

But using cvv is an important first step in minimizing fraud and avoiding chargebacks.
